The dim hopes of UDA hopefuls in Mt Kenya region

When Ndindi Nyoro unveiled the People Party of Kenya (PPK) as his political vehicle of choice after decamping from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), many Mt Kenya legislators elected under the UDA party ticket saw it as a way of having a political lifeline after their fallout with the former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, for voting yes to impeach him.

Bahati constituency MP, Irene Njoki, camp was upbeat posting updates that no Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) officials attended Ndindi Nyoro party unveiling ceremony, a hint that the legislator was poised to join the party, with Kenyans interpreting that the PPK party was a president William Ruto cushion for such legislators in his party to have a soft landing.

That UDA has lost its popularity in Mt Kenya region is not in contention as was seen during the Ol Kalou by-election when DCP swept the floor clean. And this is what is informing the incumbents and aspirants alike to seek for reelection or fresh mandates from any party other than UDA.

With Nyoro having told those who had issues with Gachagua to reconcile with him first before looking to contest on his (Nyoro) party ticket, it seems the prospects of these leaders being reelected on UDA tickets are dim.

What about the gubernatorial seats? The same observes, but for Nakuru county, it could be different.

The cosmopolitan county has a mix of Kikuyus and Kalenjins, among a sizeable population from other tribes that supports or are sympathetic towards president Ruto. This could play towards the advantage of incumbent governor, Susan Kihika, given the DCP pick for same seat is a political weakling.

But Lee Kinyanjui with his Ubuntu party could prove to be a wild card seeking his comeback in a county no governor had broken the one term jinx, and where the incumbent wants to prove this narrative wrong.

As it stands, UDA is on a wane, and the UDA "orphans" will be waiting for whichever coalition Ruto forms with parties like Orange Democratic Movement, among other fringe parties, to jump in and rescue their dwindling political fortunes.

When you think you know better

There are those people with that "I know better than follow your stup!d instructions" mentality, but regrets almost immediately when the instruction or advice given, no matter how innocuous or unwise it may look at face value, tends to have great repercussions. Take the instance of the author of this book (pictured), a strong headed former military intelligence officer, thought he knew better than his superiors. The suave con who charmed his way to our pockets

  His name was Muraya. That’s what the man introduced himself the morning he came up the winding path to my home. He was in white gumboots, a white lab coat and an equally matching white cap. He carried a cardboard with papers attached by a clip with a businesslike countenance.   My first impression of him was that he was a veterinary doctor.
